At this point in your academic career you should have a pretty good idea of how to write a great document and create a great presentation. Everything from margin space to font size and paper quality are all things in which you might be considered an expert on. When writing your PhD dissertation in aviation you’re going to want to follow the APA style guidelines. Creating the cover page is pretty simple and standard, but we thought we would create this simple instruction guide to ensure you get it right:
One of the biggest mistakes students make in creating a cover page is that they add too many fancy design elements in the vain hope that it will catch their readers’ interest and earn a few extra points for creative efforts. This couldn’t be further from the truth. This is considered a rookie move and more often than not has the opposite effect and actually annoys the reader right from the start. Don’t bold, italicize, or underline the title. It should be typed using both upper and lower case letters, with only the proper nouns capitalized. Place the title about one-third of the page down.
Immediately below the title you will put in your full name (first name followed by the last name). Again this should be typed using both upper and lower case letters. Like the title, this should also be centered with one line in between it the title and the institution information which follows in the immediate line afterwards. The name should also be placed below the sub-title if there is any included.
Beneath the above mentioned pieces you will include the institution’s name that is affiliated with the completion of your dissertation in aviation. This too will be centered and should follow the same rules regarding capitalization of words and using both upper and lower case letters. If the institution has a particular long name don’t abbreviate, simply split the name into two relatively even lines.
Your PhD advisor may want you to include a header or a page number in the cover page. This is extremely rare, but it’s always a good idea to check anyways. If you are required to include a header you will key in a shortened version of your title in the header flushed left with the page number flushed right.
